Brunei is active in a number of regional

and multilateral forums, including Asia

Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC),

the East Asia Summit (EAS), the Asean

Regional Forum (ARF), the Asean Defence

Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+), the

Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), the Forum

for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation

(FEALAC) and the Asia Cooperation


It is also a member of the Organisation

of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the World

Trade Organization (WTO) and joined

the United Nations (UN) when it became


Working hand-in-hand with these

bodies, the country has addressed many of

the world’s issues ranging from finance to

defence, health and social security. In the

last year, His Majesty and other members

in his government visited several other

countries and attended a number of

international meets.

In November 2015, the monarch

attended back-to-back meetings in the

Philippines for the APEC Leaders Summit

followed by the Asean Summit in Kuala

Lumpur, Malaysia where leaders discussed

economic reforms, trade cooperation and,

more poignantly worked hard towards

combating security threats and terrorism

in the region.
